GMO Testing
RSSL has a long established reputation in the field of GMO testing and is one of the top laboratories in the UK to offer this service.
RSSL tests for genetically modified soya, maize and rapeseed in raw materials through to complex finished products.
Our Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methodology allows us to offer qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative tests. The qualitative test is designed for screening products for presence or absence of GMO, with a limit of detection of 0.1%. Our semi-quantitative test gives an indication of the GMO content less than 0.1%, between 0.15 and 1% and greater than 1%. Finally, the quantitative testing assesses the fraction of an ingredient that is GM.
For many of our clients, we recommend a qualitative test initially, which if positive can be followed by the quantitative test.
EU Regulations (1829/203/EC and 1830/2003/EC) require labelling limits to refer to the GM content of each individual ingredient of a product and not the product as a whole. RSSL's quantitative test determines the GM content of each individual ingredient and hence allows compliance to these labelling rules.
RSSL holds UKAS (ISO/IEC 17025) accreditation for all qualitative and semi-quantitative testing for soya and maize. Accreditation has also been awarded for the quantification of four GM varieties:
-
Roundup Ready Soya
-
Maize Bt176
-
Maize Bt11
-
Maize Mon810
