Dermatological Testing

A range of clinical studies to GCP Standards are carried out to assess safety and efficacy of topical pharmaceutical, skin care, cosmetic and sunscreen products.

Our product evaluation services include:

  • Approval of trial protocols by an Independent Ethics Committee
  • Investigation of skin irritancy and sensitisation
  • Instrumental measurements of skin properties
  • Claim substantiation such as 'Dermatologically Tested' and Suitable for Sensitive Skin
  • In vitro estimation of SPF and determination of UVA protection (Boots Star Rating)
  • SPF determination using the new International Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Test Method agreed by COLIPA, CTFA-SA and JCIA in October 2002

RSSL Pharma can design protocols to suit your specific requirement, but our standard protocols include:

  • Acute skin irritancy and photo-irritancy
  • Cumulative skin irritancy
  • Skin sensitisation and photo sensitisation
  • Surfactant irritancy
  • Open application irritancy
  • Home use tests

Instrumental measurements can provide robust data for evaluating product efficacy.  Measurements include:

  • Moisturisation efficacy
  • Transepidermal water loss
  • Wrinkle smoothing
  • Elasticity
  • Skin colour
  • Skin greasiness and shine
  • Skin pH

The RSSL Pharma volunteer database contains information on skin type and colour, hair type and colour and ethnic origin.  We have a large number of reliable volunteers in the Reading area and can provide a range of different panels; male, female, sensitive skin, children and infants.
