Analytical Laboratories

Speciality Analysis Division

The Speciality Analysis Division comprises three departments: Microscopy, DNA and Protein and Investigative Analysis.

The teams provide a range of analytical services, investigative analysis and bespoke projects for customers in the food, drink, consumer products, healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. The work is carried out to UKAS and GMP standards.

Industrial placement opportunities are available in Investigative Analysisopens in a new window and Microscopyopens in a new window where you will to contribute by performing a range of analytical testing and investigative analysis (with supervision). Training in analytical techniques and quality systems will be provided to help in this role.

  • Investigative Analysis
Investigative analysis work on lipid chemistry, flavours, taints and chemical investigations using techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR and wet chemistry
  • Microscopy
The Microscopy team investigate foreign bodies, material composition and structure using characterisation techniques such as SEM, FT-IR, light microscopy and X-ray micro fluorescence.

Pharmaceutical Division

The Pharmaceutical Division comprises five departments: Pharmaceutical Chemistryopens in a new window, Functional Ingredients, Metals, Physical Sciencesopens in a new window and Clinical Sciencesopens in a new window.

The teams provide a range of services including analytical and investigative analysis, bespoke projects and clinical studies for customers in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, personal care, consumer goods and food sectors. The work is carried out to GMP standards and UKAS (where required).

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Undertakes a wide range of contract testing to GMP.  This includes both routine and investigative analysis using techniques such as wet chemistry, UV-Visible, IR, dissolution testing and a number of chromatographic techniques including GC, HPLC, TLC and LC-MS.
  • Functional Ingredients
This laboratory performs a wide range of analysis on a variety of different products.  The team are trained in analytical methods to detect, for example, vitamins, colours, sugars, sweeteners, preservatives, natural products etc.  The department is particularly focussed on chromatography techniques and the team routinely operate HPLC, GC, IC, LC-MS and UV-Visible.  Development and validation of analytical methods for both internal and external customers is an important part of the work carried out.
  • Clinical Sciences
Clinical Sciences carry out a variety of volunteer and patient based studies for consumer product and pharmaceutical companies.  Many of the studies are safety and efficacy assessments of cosmetics, personal care products, food and over-the counter medications.  All studies are performed to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and are approved by an Independent Ethics Committee.
