New NMR capability at RSSL

Reading Scientific Services Ltd has commissioned a new nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer in its Berkshire laboratories. The new instrument enhances the analytical capability of RSSL, and is more sensitive and more flexible than the company's existing NMR instrument.

Key appointment for RSSL

RSSL has appointed Philip Payne as its new Investigative Partner, providing manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, APIs and excipients with support in addressing problems that have led to 'out of specification' test results. He will provide hands-on quality and process improvement support, addressing quality issues within the client's own site and across their supply chain. RSSL can also provide training in topics such as GMP, GDP and quality management, as well as auditing to lead assessor and internal corporate standards.

Delegates who attended the UK's first training course for Responsible Persons (RP) have voted it a huge success, with delegates consistently giving the course top marks of 'outstanding' for both content and delivery.

New course on writing reports

RSSL Pharma Training is launching a new course "Report Writing For Scientists", which will assist scientists in any discipline to write clearer and better reports, especially where these are for a non-scientific audience. It should be especially useful to researchers and technical staff needing to explain or illuminate their work to non-specialist managers or company directors, or perhaps to scientists working in contract laboratories who need to report back to customers who do not speak the same ‘scientific language’.

Consumers confused by cosmetic claims

It appears that the majority of consumers have little or no understanding about the true meaning of pack claims made on cosmetic products.  Only terms like 'dermatologically tested' and 'systemic' are understood by more than 50% of the general population. However, other common terms like 'non-comedogenic', 'opthalmologically approved' and 'skin friendly' are understood by less than 20%.

New training for Responsible Persons

RSSL Pharma Training is to launch a new training course in the UK to develop the skills of Responsible Persons (RP), and those aiming for RP status, currently working in the wholesale distribution of pharmaceuticals. Article 79(b) of Directive 2001/83/EC requires licence holders to have a RP available to safeguard users against poor distribution practices. However, to date, there has been no formal training on offer to equip the RP to carry out these duties.

'Herbal viagra' exposes risks

On 7 April 2009, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) reported that a so-called 'herbal viagra' (Jia Yi Jian) that is sold in many traditional chinese medicine outlets, contains dangerous levels of the prescription drugs sibutramine and tadalafil.
