RSSL's microscopy department can investigate pills and capsules by using a combination of FT-IR (Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy) and microscopy techniques to examine, identify and determine the nature of any pharmaceutical found in products.

RSSL uses an extensive database of pills and capsules to identify them from their shape, colour and markings.

Drugs of abuse in the form of powders and plant materials e.g. cannabis can also be identified in collaboration with the analytical chemistry department.
