Physical and Structural Properties of Pharmaceuticals

We offer a broad range of analytical techniques and expertise to characterise the physical and structural features of excipients, APIs, combination drug delivery systems and finished pharmaceutical and cosmetics products.

Structural Analysis and Characterisation of Physical Properties

Characterising your raw materials’, finished products’ and medical devices physical and structural properties is critical for product and method development (including pharmacopoeial testing), routine analysis and troubleshooting manufacturing process issues. Physical analysis is necessary not just for optimising quality and performance, but in assessing how your raw materials, intermediaries and final products react to processing conditions and over shelf-life. Physical properties data plays a vital role in stability studies, batch release and method validation.

We have teams that work together in order to provide the best scientific cross-functional and multidisciplinary service, whatever your the requirements of your project. We analyse moisture content, particle size, density, thermal properties, tablet hardness and friability, viscosity and rheology. We can also provide texture analysis of packaging materials/containers such as syringes.

Analysis is detailed, wide-ranging and specific to your needs. Using the combined powder of data interpretation from laser diffraction (Malvern 2000 & 3000 and Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZSP), DVS and Powder Flow instrumentation, assistance can be provided to gain a greater understanding of powder behaviour and also manufacturing issues such as caking.

Example of techniques we use include:-

  • Karl Fischer
  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
  • Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
  • U-Tube/Brookfield Viscometers
  • Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS)
  • LUMiSizer
  • Brookfield Powder Flow
  • Laser Diffraction (Malvern Mastersizer 2000 & 3000 and Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZSP)

Physical properties we characterise are:-

  • Droplet/particle size and size distribution
  • Viscosity
  • Viscoelasticity
  • Thixtropy
  • Stress relaxation/growth
  • Yield stress/strain
  • Melting point
  • Degree of crystallinity
  • Glass transition temperature
  • Specific heat capacity
  • Moisture content
  • Water activity/equibilibrium relative humidity
  • Density
