Can diet improve ADHD symptoms?

In a new study published in the Journal of Functional Foods in Health and Diseases, Massari et al have undertaken an investigation to determine the reference values of specific biochemical markers that have been associated with behaviour typical of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  The study was based on data extracted from the Riordan Clinic database covering a period of over 10 years.  Researchers performed laboratory tests in 116 patients (34% female and 66% male) between the ages of 2.7 and 25 years old who were diagnosed with ADHD.  Patients were followed from three months to 2 – 3 years.  The tests compared the distribution of fatty acids, essential metals and the levels of metabolic stress factors with established reference ranges before and after intervention.  In addition, researchers analysed the association between toxic metal concentrations and the levels of essential metals.  The results showed that supplementation with vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and amino acids can improve ADHD symptoms.  After the intervention, 80% of children treated from several weeks to 1 – 2 years demonstrated an improvement of metabolic stress level.  For these patients, the levels of EPA were increased and the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 was improved.  The study demonstrated that metabolic correction of biochemical disturbances using essential fatty acids, amino acids and minerals can improve fatty acid profiles and metabolic stress levels.  These variations from reference values have been associated with behaviour typical of ADHD.  The researchers suggest that further studies need to be conducted with integrative metabolic correction therapy to determine the value in the management of ADHD.
