Probiotic supplement found to increase circulating levels of vitamin D

A study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, by Jones et al. from McGill University, Montreal, has examined the effect of the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242 on fat-soluble vitamins. Previous studies have reported that L. reuteri NCIMB 30242 reduces cholesterol and the absorption of noncholesterol sterols in hypercholesterolemic adults; however its effect on the absorption of fat soluble vitamins is unknown. Low vitamin D status has been associated as a risk factor for osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.  An optimal range of 75-100nmol/l has been recommended for individuals at risk for musculoskeletal health problems, CVD, autoimmune diseases and cancer.  To investigate circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamn D  (25(OH)D) in response to oral supplementation of the probiotic L. reuteri NCIMB 30242, Jones et al recruited 127 otherwise healthy hypercholesterolemic patients aged between 20 and 75 years old.  The study involved a 2 week washout period, a 2 week run in period in which a placebo capsule was consumed twice daily at breakfast or dinner and a 9 week intervention in which subjects consumed either the placebo or L. reuteri capsules twice daily at breakfast and dinner.  The placebo capsule contained 300 mg maltodextrin/silicon dioxide excipient and the L reuteri capsules contained 130g lyophilized bacteria and 170 mg maltodextrin/silicon dioxide excipient.  Dietary recommendations were also advised for the entire 13 week period.  At baseline and at week 9 of the intervention period, dietary intake was assessed using a diet journal and blood samples were taken.  Jones et al. evaluated the participants’ diet journals for total energy, total lipids, total proteins, and total carbohydrates as well as micronutrients including vitamin A, retinol, carotenoids, vitamin E and vitamin D.  Plasma was analysed for serum LDL-cholesterol, calcium, phosphate, vitamin E and β-carotene, amongst others.  The scientist found no difference between the placebo and L. reuteri groups over the intervention period in dietary intake.  They also found no significant difference between the placebo and L. reuteri group over the intervention period in serum vitamin A, vitamin E, β-carotene, calcium or phosphate over the intervention period.  However 25(OH)D increased by 14.9 nmol/l or 25.5% over the invention period in the L. reuteri group. The scientists note that whilst the mechanisms of action are not clear, they offer a number of observations including the fact that research has shown that increased absorption of dietary vitamin D is associated with increased hydrogen ion concentration or lower pH in the intestine.
