Effects of soy-dairy protein after resistance exercise

A recent study by Reidy and colleagues from the University of Texas demonstrates that consuming a mixture of soy-dairy protein after resistance exercise improves the transport of amino acid into muscle similarly to the effect of whey protein. Their research also suggests that the protein blend may be a better alternative to whey protein during post-exercise recovery, extending the delivery of certain amino acids to muscles for an additional hour, and leading to increased overall amino acid balance - which suggests prolonged muscle building.

The findings come from a double-blind, randomized clinical trial in which 16 adults were given either a (soy-dairy) protein blend or whey protein 1 hour after exercise. The blend contained leucine (1.9 ± 0.1g), phenylalanine (1.0 ± 0.1g), valine (1.3 ± 0.02g) and essential amino acids (9.0 ± 0.4g) obtained from sodium caseinate, whey protein isolate and soy protein isolate. Whey protein was composed of 100% whey protein isolate.

After consumption participants' muscle biopsies and blood samples were collected at rest, 3 and 5 hours post-exercise for testing. Researchers investigated phenylalanine transport into muscle and gene expression of selected amino acid transporters and myofibrillar protein synthesis. In both scenarios (blend or whey consumption) all investigated markers were increased to a similar extent.

The authors of the study suggest that the amino acid transporters are sensitive to amino acid availability and therefore the combination of protein with different digestion rates may stimulate transporter gene expression in a different manner to rapidly digested protein. The findings suggest the importance of unique protein combinations for extended amino acid availability and muscle recovery following exercise. [MedicalNewsToday]
