Concord grape juice shows improvement in cognitive function.

In a study funded by Welch Foods, scientists have found that consumption of Concord Grape Juice (CGJ) can improve cognitive function in healthy middle-aged adults.

In a study funded by Welch Foods, scientists have found that consumption of Concord Grape Juice (CGJ) can improve cognitive function in healthy middle-aged adults.

Concord grapes are a variety particularly favoured in the northern states of America, such as Washington, New York and Michigan. The variety of grape has a particular flavour which is a staple of the American diet as juices and in jams and jellies.

In the study, 25 women, between 40 and 50 years old with preteen children and in full time employment, were given either a daily dose of 355ml of CGJ for a three month period. After this time, the groups were crossed over with a 4 week “flush-out” period between the two halves of the study.

Improvements in Immediate spatial memory and driving performance were seen in the CGJ group, though other markers such as verbal recall and general reaction times showed no improvement. These improvements are attributed to the high levels of polyphenols found in the CGJ (nearly 800 mg per serving).

Previous studies have shown benefits of high doses of polyphenols for patients with mild cognitive impairment, but this study, along with similar work carried out by Kean et al have shown that benefits are also seen in healthy adults, as well as those with cognitive decline or neurodegenerative disease.
