Join us for a fun, interactive science workshop designed to inspire the next generation of scientists on 20 February at The Earley Crescent Resource Centre, Reading.

Local children are invited to take part in RSSL’s science roadshow next week. Organised as part of our Science Outreach Programme, the one-day event will enable participants to get ‘hands-on’ with a range of exciting experiments led by our team of scientists and STEM ambassadors.

“We want to encourage young people to see science in a positive light; not only as an interesting subject to study but also a potential career path in the future. The roadshow provides the ideal platform for us to bring it to life in a series of practical sessions, chosen to demonstrate the scope and relevance of the subject in a relaxed setting,” says Kate Goodfellow, scientist at RSSL.

The programme covers eight different topics, which have been carefully chosen to give a scientific perspective to everyday life. Handwashing becomes the story of microbes, while recycling tackles the problem of why plastic is filling our oceans. Basic scientific principles will also be addressed including chromatography, surface tension and gases. In each case, material will be tailored according to the participating age group - either 4-10 years or 11+ - to encourage engagement and understanding.

“This is an exciting initiative for us and the first of what we hope will be a series of roadshow dates. The aim is for young people to experience science in a format that sparks their imagination and curiosity. Smoking volcanoes, flames, slime and fire all feature in the workshops - in a safe and secure environment, of course!” adds Kate.

The Science Roadshow is organised in partnership with the Earley Crescent Resource Centre; a voluntary organisation dedicated to supporting the development of an integrated community.
