Even at the concept and design stage it is possible to start assessing the materials that are believed to be the lead candidates for the final medical device. To determine the latter, chemical characterisation of potential materials can be carried out in accordance with pharmacopoeial test methods using a combination of wet chemistry, chromatography (e.g. HPLC and GC) and spectroscopy (e.g. NMR, FTIR, AAS, ICP-OES, GFAAS and ICP-MS). Further testing of the active ingredient can additionally be performed for identification purposes of impurity or degradation species using such techniques as GC-MS, LC-MS and NMR.
