RSSL’s biological analysis experts bring years of experience to support you with first class analysis and specialist consultancy. Our capabilities in Biological Sciences cover a range of techniques: Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), electrophoresis and a range of microbiology techniques.


We offer routine and advanced chromatographic separation chemistry for a wide range of matrices, including ingredients, food products, pharmaceuticals, chemical, healthcare and personal care products. Separation techniques used include Ion Chromatography (IC), Liquid Chromatography (LC), Gas Chromatography (GC), and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). Our detection systems range from Flame Ionisation (FID), UltraViolet/Diode Array (UV), Fluorescence (FD) and Refractive Index (RI), to Mass Spectrometry (MS), Electron Capture (ECD) and Evaporative Light Scattering (ELSD).

Our scientists have years of experience in sample analysis, covering a broad range of materials. Whether you need us to help solve research and production issues, identify foreign matter, or investigate structure-property relationships, we have the expertise, capability, techniques and equipment to deliver. We conduct microscopic analysis using techniques including: light microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), x-ray tomography, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, confocal microscopy and particle size analysis.

Physical Sciences

We test the physical properties of chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, ingredients and more, to support product development and solve problems. We have deep industry knowledge in the food, drink, pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, and extensive experience supporting product development as well as helping troubleshoot product issues, including contamination. We can characterise samples' particle size and rheology, and conduct moisture and thermal analysis, amongst other physical and structural investigation.

Product and Ingredient Innovation

We provide cutting edge product, food innovation and NPD consultancy services with our food consultants.  Helping you with new product development, ingredient development, taste optimisation and development and optimisation of OTC pharmaceuticals and supplements.


We offer routine and advanced spectroscopic analysis of a wide range of matrices.  Our techniques for spectroscopy analysis include Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AA), Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Inductively Coupled Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR analysis), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and UltraViolet/Visible (UV/VIS) spectroscopy.

Wet Chemistry

Our scientists perform a wide range of classical qualitative and quantitative analytical wet chemistry techniques. As well as the classical techniques found in the pharmacopoeias and other published methods, we use specific instrumental techniques - gravimetric, titrimetric and colourimetric. We use Ultra-Violet (UV) and visible spectroscopy, and ion selective electrodes.
