I started at RSSL in June 2024 after almost 30 years working as a Senior Research Scientist in academia, biotech and biopharma. I have an academic background in Physiology and Neuroscience and hold a PhD in Developmental Neurobiology.
During the latter years of my previous role, I took on several additional Health and Safety-related responsibilities alongside my scientific research, gaining a professional qualification through the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).
My role at RSSL is to develop and administer the Health, Safety and Environment Management System, provide technical and personal leadership to ensure that RSSL complies with appropriate legislative requirements and that colleagues are aware of their responsibilities. I also see my role as fundamental in fostering and supporting a positive Health and Safety culture in which individuals feel well-advised, supported and empowered.
In my relatively short time with RSSL, it has become abundantly clear to me that the company is hugely respected and valued within the wider food and pharmaceutical industries. RSSL provides an invaluable service to other companies, many of which are developing drugs to improve the lives of patients. However, RSSL is so much more than that. There are numerous initiatives beyond the day-to-day scientific workings of the business.
Diversity, equity and inclusion is hugely important, there is a rich ‘extra-curricular’ culture covering employee wellbeing and support, a Science Outreach Programme engaging local schools and colleges, community-based volunteering initiatives, social events and fun activities, as well as a rich and diverse workforce, resulting in an enjoyable and vibrant working environment. On a personal level, I have the perfect amount of support at RSSL, without feeling micro-managed. I feel trusted and empowered to make a positive contribution.
Having a background in scientific research affords me a better understanding of many of the processes and activities that are undertaken at RSSL. There are unique challenges associated with the pharmaceutical industry in terms of hazards and risks and it is important to get the balance right between delivering cutting-edge science and doing it safely.
No two days are the same, which is great. I often find myself wondering where the day has gone and wishing for a few extra hours! I can be collating Health and Safety data and reporting it to the leadership team one day, and to the whole site the next. I provide Health and Safety induction training for new starters, advice on risk assessments, organise workplace safety inspections, perform incident root cause investigations and promote awareness through safety campaigns.
I chair meetings of several safety-related committees and attend others in my capacity as Health and Safety Advisor. I may also be providing in-the-moment advice on samples received or best practice for waste disposal. All in all, I have a rich and varied remit, which is both challenging and rewarding.
During my time with RSSL I feel like I’ve had a positive impact on the existing safety culture, encouraging our scientists, food technologists and admin staff to give greater consideration to their working practices from a Health and Safety viewpoint.
I am proud to be working alongside the Leadership Team, People Managers, Health and Safety Reps, First Aiders, Fire Wardens, Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassadors and Occupational Health Providers to create a safe place of work for all.
It’s important to recognise that Health and Safety is important in all workplaces – however, a high hazard and risk environment such as ours can be especially challenging. Safety must always come first – we need to ensure that staff go home to loved ones in the same condition they left them!
We cannot celebrate success if it comes at the expense of injury, ill health or worse. RSSL is hugely respected and valued within the industries we operate, which is why it is so important to create and maintain our strong and positive safety culture.
I am proud of everyone understanding the importance of Health and Safety – it isn’t intended as a hindrance to progress – it is to support it. The team understands that keeping themselves and their colleagues safe at work is the right thing to do, not just a legal requirement.
Get involved and be proactive! Get into the habit of noticing hazards and risks and speaking up if something doesn’t seem right. Any observation, however small, could have a bigger impact further down the line. Volunteer for Health and Safety-related roles such as First Aider, Fire Warden, Wellbeing and Mental Health Ambassador etc. Look for training opportunities such as IOSH and NEBOSH. Feel empowered to speak up if something doesn’t seem right - you will never be penalised for making a safe choice and doing the right thing. In fact, your actions might just save someone’s life one day.
