Jay is an Associate Professor of Microbiology at the University of Reading, with over 19 years of experience in research and teaching. She specialises in microbiology, molecular biology and the development of novel antimicrobials and vaccines.
Jay began her PhD in 2005 at the University of Reading, focusing on the metabolism of Rhizobium bacteria, which form mutualistic relationships with legumes. Her research utilised molecular techniques such as PCR, cloning, DNA microarrays, microbial growth assays and metabolomics.
After completing her PhD in 2009, Jay took a postdoctoral research scientist position at the University of Bath, where she contributed to a large interdisciplinary project investigating metal-based antimicrobial surface coatings. She also studied the evolution of human pathogenicity in Photorhabdus bacteria using advanced techniques including RNAseq, proteomics and phenotype microarrays.

Currently, as a microbiology lecturer at the University of Reading, Jay has accumulated significant experience in preparing teaching materials, delivering lectures, conducting practical classes and managing assessments. In 2018, she was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Authority and earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP).
Now an Associate Professor, Jay holds various leadership roles within the School of Biological Sciences, including Module Convenor for several microbiology courses, Programme Director for BSc Microbiology, and Academic Tutor for 20-30 undergraduates annually. She also supervises PhD students and continues her research into alternative antimicrobials and vaccine development.
