Speaking at the opening of the new laboratory at RSSL, head of food R&D, Marta Ahijado, said:

It means we can assess the mechanical and physical properties of packaging materials – both existing and new - solve shelf-life challenges and ensure packaging is a safe and protective solution for the product.'
RSSL’s comprehensive packaging testing service is designed to evaluate a broad range of materials and formats across primary and secondary packaging categories. The team are able to respond to customer needs using industry-recognised and tailored methodologies, with a suite of analytical techniques. These include evaluating material properties, such as barrier protection, ease of opening and mechanical strength, as well as the impact of the packaging on product shelf life, odour and appearance. Wider issues related to counterfeit materials can also be investigated.
'Our analytical results can be used to support modelling and simulation initiatives, such as developing prototype packaging formats and assessing packaging performance in a virtual environment. This helps our clients deliver new packaging solutions to the market faster and more cost effectively,' explains David Wright, RSSL’s packaging technical specialist.
