  • 14 July

Tim is joined by Aaron and Rebecca (RSSL) for this insightful webinar diving into the important microbiological controls when restarting a facility after a period of maintenance shutdown.

    The session covers:

    • Controls during shutdown
    • Risk assessments for facility start-ups
    • Bacterial spore and fungal risks
    • Recertification of cleanrooms
    • Validation requirements for utilities and equipment
    • Updating environmental monitoring plans
    • Assessing controls and ongoing issues

  • 15 September

Tim and Rebecca (RSSL) examine one of the key potential sources when it comes to  risk in pharma manufacturing - raw materials.

With raw materials representing the start of the manufacturing process, they provide the opportunity for microorganisms to transfer directly into a product. It is for this reason that they must be carefully and fully considered.

    This session covers:

    • Origins of raw materials and specific risk factors
    • Different risks for liquid and solid materials
    • Identifying objectionable microorganisms
    • Characterising and evaluating contaminated materials
    • Water activity
    • Risk factors relating to test methods
    • Supplier quality
    • Transfer controls

  • 13 October

Tim is joined by Mark (RSSL) to consider the importance of biosafety testing for biopharmaceutical products, looking at how to mitigate risks of contamination from adventitious agents (viruses, mycoplasma, bacteria, fungi) and process-related impurities.

    The session covers:

    • Starting materials and cell bank testing
    • Control of master and working cell banks
    • Animal-derived material screening
    • Detection of adventitious agents
    • Virus testing
    • Mycoplasma testing
    • Use of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)
    • Viral clearance and downstream validation
    • Advanced modality considerations – how complex products demand tailored biosafety considerations

  • 24 November

The revised EU GMP Annex 1 has fundamentally changed how Environmental Monitoring (EM) should be viewed. Environmental Monitoring is no longer simply a programme for collecting microbial and particle data. Instead, it has become an integral element of the overall Contamination Control Strategy (CCS), providing evidence that contamination risks are understood, controlled and continuously reviewed.

In this webinar Tim and Rebecca (RSSL) discuss the revised EU GMP Annex and what it means for you.

    The session covers:

    • Moving to a risk based environmental monitoring programme
    • Integrating environmental monitoring into the Contamination Control Strategy
    • Understanding contamination pathways
    • Adopting rapid microbiological methods
    • Re-reviewing environmental monitoring for continued relevance
    • Trend analysis
    • Answering key regulatory questions including:

      • Why was each monitoring location was selected?
      • What is the contamination risk being monitored?
      • How does the data support contamination control?
      • What actions are taken when adverse trends emerge?

About the speakers

Dr. Tim Sandle has over twenty-five years’ experience of microbiological research and biopharmaceutical processing. He is a member of several editorial boards and he has written over six hundred book chapters, peer reviewed papers and technical articles relating to microbiology. Dr. Sandle works for a pharmaceutical manufacturer in the UK, and is a visiting tutor at both the University of Manchester and UCL.

Rebecca McManus has two years’ experience at RSSL, where she works as an Account Sales Executive focused on sterile and non-sterile microbiology. Since joining the commercial team in early 2025, she has supported clients across a range of services, from microbial limit testing and sterility analysis to environmental monitoring programmes and cleaning validation, providing dedicated commercial support throughout the testing journey.
