Frequently asked questions

  • Most food and beverage products in the UK require nutritional data, covering energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrates, sugars, protein and salt.  Additional testing maybe required e.g. fibre, vitamins/minerals etc. depending on nutrition or health claims made on pack.

  • For routine label declaration on many products, calculation from ingredient specifications is acceptable under UK food labelling regulation.  However analytical testing is essential in many cases when products are close to the HFSS threshold, your product is highly processed, when nutrition or health claims require substantiation, when a retailers technical team request data, when formulations change or when you need to defend your label in the event of regulatory enquiry or consumer complaint.  

  • RSSL provides nutritional testing across all food and drink categories – ambient grocery, chilled and frozen products, beverages, snacking, confectionery, bakery, dairy, functional foods, sports nutrition and more.  Our analytical methods are validated for a wide range of food matrices.

  • RSSL offers a standard 7-day turnaround for most nutritional testing services.   

  • Yes, many of our client's partner with RSSL for both new product profiling as well as ongoing batch verification testing. We can design a testing programme that covers your full portfolio. 

  • Get in touch with our team here, they will discuss your requirements and provide a quote.  Once you have provided confirmation to go ahead, you will receive instructions on how to submit your sample details through My RSSL, our client portal where you can manage your project from submission through to results.

  • This will depend on the scope of testing, but as a general guide we recommend a minimum of 250g of finished product per sample.  If you are combining nutritional testing with additional testing e.g. allergens, vitamins etc. a larger sample quantity will be needed.  Our team will confirm the exact requirements during the quoting stage.
